In 685AD the Picts under a King called Brude laid waste to the Northumbrian army of Ecgfrith thus halting the expansion of the Northunmbrian Angles (part of later England) to beyond the borders of Dundee. Many believe that without this victory the Kingdom of Scotland would never have existed... historical link.
All good Temples need revisited - and 20 years on from the first 'Dunnichen Festival' PICTANIUM in association with the LETHAM HOTEL give us the '1320th Dunnichen Gathering' - a Celebration of the Battle of Dunnichen at the 'Electric Temple', Letham, Angus, with additional music and sessions at the 'Convention Club' (Letham Hotel) on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st May 2005. In 1985, the 1300th anniversary of the Battle of Dunnichen, Robbie the Pict started a festival in celebration of this historic (but largely forgotten) battle and also to highlight the legal errosion of Scottish Sovereign Rights by the then Thatcher government. Over the years this evolved into a 'colourful' festival which split events into the 'uppies' and the 'downies'. Up-the-hill camping and free music with questionable legal permission, and down-the-hill at the Electric Temple (Letham Village Hall) for the Dunnichen Festival as organised by Robbie with Council-sanctioned camping and Brownie Hut all-day Breakfasts. After several years of antagonism from the local authorities over the up-the-hill festival the 'Dunnichen Festival' at the Electric Temple was suspended and three years later the Tayside police and local landowners effectively cordoned the Dunnichen Hill area preventing the unnofficial festival from continuing... in Robbie's own word's...
